Daniel Freitag Grateful for Iowa Basketball Offer
'24 Two-Sport Standout Talks Hawkeyes
Jalen Suggs captured the attention of Power 5 basketball and football coaches while prepping in Minneapolis several years ago. Another two-sport star has emerged in the Twins Cities area for the 2024 Class.
Bloomington (MN) Jefferson High point guard Daniel Freitag already reports college basketball scholarship offers from Baylor, Iowa, Iowa State, Minnesota and Wisconsin. He holds an opportunity from the Golden Gopher football program as well.
Hawkeye Basketball extended an offer on Friday.
“It’s nice to receive an offer from Iowa because I know how big of a program it is,” Freitag told HF. “I’ve been impressed watching what they’ve done with (Luka) Garza and (Keegan) Murray, sending both of those guys to the NBA.”
Garza was the national player of the year in ’21 before the Detroit Pistons picked him in last year’s draft. Murray joined him as a first-team All-American this past season. Murray was projected to be a Top 10 draft pick next week.
“I know how good of a program Iowa is and how well they have been able to play these last couple years. They’ve always been an impressive team to me. I didn’t even know an offer from Iowa was even possible until recently. I’m so grateful,” Freitag said.
Freitag (6-3, 175) is running with the Howard Pulley AAU program this spring and summer after averaging 27 points a game during his sophomore season at Jefferson. Jack McCaffery, the youngest son of Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery, plays with the D1 Minnesota AAU program.
“I can tell the (Iowa) coaching staff are good people even with how limited communication has been,” Freitag said “I’ve only been in contact with them the last three days. I also ran into coach McCaffery at an AAU tournament where I played against his son. After the game, he told me he thought I played well. I was happy to hear him say that.”
Being in the Big Ten Conference footprint, Freitag is familiar with the Hawkeyes. The scholarship offer presents a different perspective, however.
“I can’t wait to watch Iowa’s games now knowing that I can play there if I choose to. It’s a whole different view now. I’m also excited to visit sometime and watch how they operate behind the scenes,” he said.
“No set date yet on a visit but with Iowa being fairly close to us, I believe we will get down there sooner than later.”
Freitag has visited Iowa State twice. He’s been to Wisconsin once.
Academics are a big part of the decision-making process for Freitag.
“I’m not 100 percent sure on one major, although I think I’ll want to get into Business,” he said.
